Story Immersion Broken for High End Players
Had a break from ESO. Came back to play Summerset. Although I’m currently finding the story very compelling - unfortunately, the easiness of the overland content is completely immersion breaking, in my opinion.
For example, take any quest from the game. It nicely builds up a particular threat to Tamriel you need to get rid of, you hear the great back story, you do X Y and Z to prepare, but then - you end up killing this hugely built up threat in a couple of hits if you’re a semi high end player.
And yes. Before you start. I know I can make things more challenging by not allocating my CP, play naked or do some other content. But why should I have to?
Every time a new Chapter or Zone DLC comes out, it feels as if the only way I can properly immerse myself with the story aspect is to start a new character. I think this is a bit unfair. Why can’t I use my main character to enjoy the newly released story?
I don’t know any other MMO where the player can simply blast through any new story content if they have a semi high end character.
I just feel as if this is a big shame because the story that comes with each new content release - I feel - is always so interesting and immersive but, these feelings quickly fade because of the easiness of the content.
To say new story content isn’t meant to be challenging for high end players - only trials and vet dungeons etc. - isn’t fair. Especially bearing in mind that Elder Scrolls games are known for being heavily story driven.
I know the positive reasons as to why the overland/story content is easy - because of One Tamriel etc. But, surely there can be some new story content that can be released just for high end players? For example, some form of new reworked Adventure Zone? I’m sure whatever was released for high end players only wouldn’t dissuade new players from starting the game.
Lastly, with CP constantly being increased but story/overland content never getting any harder - surely this will break aforementioned content eventually? As players will just be way too powerful in the future.
CONCLUSION
First, thanks to everyone who has given their input regarding this topic. I’ve tried to carefully consider everyone’s views. And I’ve come to the following opinion –
Although I would like some specific change or content release for high end players, I do recognise, after reading people’s views on this thread, that this is not really viable.
Creating a harder version of overland content for higher end players – would revert ESO to post One Tamriel. Creating a zone like Craglorn – I haven’t yet seen any good arguments to persuade me that this could work successfully in practice. Ultimately, ZoS have a model that works and generates money – so why change it?
There just simply isn’t a big enough demand from high end players to make overland content more challenging – I completely recognise this. That said, it’s clear to see from this thread alone that they’re a lot of players that do feel immersion completely breaks due to easy content.
So, taking all the views I’ve considered together – I think the following idea or, something similar would be great:
I can’t see how the above would have any negative impact on the game. I’m not even suggesting extra rewards if a player decided to use such an item. Just a simple, discretionary option available for high end players who want to enjoy newly released Chapters and/or Zone DLCs without the immersion of the story breaking due to killing everything with a whisper. For players who like things the way they’re, don’t use the item – simple.
The above idea is much better than artificially handicapping yourself by way of wasting gold resetting CP and/or running around naked. This idea is much more fluid and lore friendly.
On an ending note aka last desperate plea to ZoS. I remember playing when vet levels were still around; becoming level 50 and having my showdown with Molag Bal – after going through a somewhat difficult main story questline. When I beat him, I remember feeling a huge sense of accomplishment, as the battle was quite epic and the story leading up to it was interesting and fun. But, I was thinking about this recently. Imagine if a new player ended up levelling by doing all the Chapters and DLCs first, and for whatever reason did the main story questline last…the final showdown with Molag Bal would be so underwhelming, as the fight would be far too easy.
I get that ZoS needs to attract new players. I get that story line content must be balanced to a certain extent due to the nature of MMOs. But, I also get that so much hard work goes into the main quests in this game, especially with new Chapters. And so, I think it’s just a real shame to see all that awesome story telling fall by the wayside – for high end players – when you finally confront the main antagonist of a quest…and kill them with a light attack.
Please, ZoS, consider everything that has been set out in this thread.

The undaunted quartermaster at each enclave should sell a drink that removes all CP effects and increases damage taken by 50% while in overland zones. Each additional mead consumed increases damage taken by a further 50%. Drink as many as you like, and your max health, magicka and stamina will be increased by a big fat zero. All monsters killed while under the influence of Undaunted Mead drop more gold, and any mobs that drop set items have a chance to drop two items instead of one.
1000+CP with 50k DPS? No problem! Grab some mead and get questing!
It's just no fun to gimp yourself as a workaround to the easiness of the story content. An increase in difficulty must be built into the story itself. I could imagine receiving a letter from Maj when you reach CP cap, explaining how mundane foes like wolves and bandits must be getting incredibly dull for you now that you have braved so many dangers, and that those who are truly undaunted often find great pleasure in chugging down a mug of her special brew before hitting the road...

I’m just curious on this. Obviously Zos knows the actual numbers.
For me I do them all, but that’s because they are free with a sub. I’d not buy them.
So do you actually use crowns to purchase them?

Ever wondered why your tempers used to sell for 6k and now 3k?
The answer is easy and brutal.
I am experiencing such a massive, unckecked, untamed amount of bots that I've never seen before. Usually they would mostly roam starter towns, but nowadays there are in Gold Coast and Grathwood, but also Al'Akir.
There are at least two kinds: the "bots train", where bots follow each other and mostly auto-grind XP and later get sold.
Then there are the resource bots, the best of them have taken the kind help from ZOS in the form of +60% speed buffs so they don't need a complex script to mount and unmount. They just speed through the area. I've followed one of them for 2 hours doing the same large, preset "circle" and gathering very large amounts of materials.
Of course your casual 10 minutes or even 30 minutes a day worth of materials "grinding" cannot compete with 24/7 of these min maxed bots. Then they refine a zillion materials and dump hundreds of tempers on the guild traders. I've seen a guy dumping up to 2,400 refined cloth every day, imagine what this volume does to gold materials prices?
Of course I reported the bots and I can even post screenshots of them but forum rules forbid that.
But this is not enough. ZOS has never implemented some basic mechanism to prevent botting and - if they used to employ manual checks - they have given up. Otherwise I couldn't explain how huge this phenomenon is growing to.

Should normal dungeons drop blue monster helms?
There are constant posts moaning about players not being good enough for vet content. Fake or poor DPS, fake tanks and healers. Content taking too long.
One thing is at the root of all this. Monster helms. The only way to get them is in vet and since the best set ups are now 5-5-2, it’s what everybody should be aiming for.
The best way to improve the average quality of players in vet content, is to make so those that queue for it are there for the actual content.
If normals dropped monster helms in blue, then a significant number of players would not step into vet dungeons, they would then not go in with no clue what they are doing and would not need carrying.
The current “vet is the only place to get critical gear” is hurting the quality of groups that go into vet dungeons and seriously ramping up toxicity.
So should normals drop blue monster helms, in the hopes of significantly improving the quality players that actually run vet content?

TANKING: Class Diversity Discussion
So after reading the class rep notes from the 16th it got me thinking about something. For a long time now the premise of the gameplay style has been play as you want, and the devs have been trying to make that more of a reality with making sure all classes can do all roles. However there is a risk to have it be too much, homogenization in pursuit of class diversity, removing what makes classes feel, look and play unique. Therefor I wanted to ask everyone, the devs included, what do you think should be something all tanks should be able to do and what should/is the unique selling point of a specific class. This as well can be extended to the weapons of the Tanks, Frost Staff and Sword and Board, what should be unique for each weapon and what should both weapons be able to bring to any fight.
For me something that all tanks should be able to do, other than the obvious taunt, is to control the battlefield. Crowd Control is very important to a tank in my opinion, there were countless arguments over the years about DKs superiority in this with both Choking Talons(AoE Root/debuff) and Unrelenting Grip(single target mob pull), then we got Wardens, who basically had the same skill set yet slightly different. It was a subtle difference but in my opinion it was enough of one. Gripping shards was a HP based DoT above its root and had a small chance to still apply the same minor maim as the choking talons. The Frozen gates were also a great alternative with its AoE trap set up and ability to quickly hit multiple enemies. However the other classes lacked a lot of this. Sorcs had Encase, which while weaker than Talons and Shards was still a great Root with its own unique design, it being directed and targeted much differently. Templars had a bunch of snares and knock downs but no Root or "chain". Nightblades had it worse in my opinion when it came to crowd control, with the exception of the Stun from Soul Teather, they had nothing and at sometimes the opposite of what they wanted, fear. Fear, while incapacitating the enemies offensive capabilities was/is an ability people will hate you for using as a Tank. It spreads enemies away rather than clustering them up as we want.
We now have Time Stop and Silver Leash, but they are both extremely hard to use. Time Stop just has too long of a duration, in both morphs, one has a channel for 2s to get a 3s stun and the other has a 4s duration before giving the 3s stun all be it with no channel attached to it. It works too slow, and costs too much for what it gives. Silver Leash is not as bad if it wasn't for one thing, its cost. Silver Leash costs stamina, which for a tank needing to block is very bad. You could use it to chain in all the ranged mobs in a room but you would be out of stamina after doing it leaving you open. Its one saving grace for now is that with a Sorc using Dark Deal its possible to make it work, not as well as a DK or a Warden but its still viable. This again gives sorcs at least a viable version of an AoE Root and a Single Target pull. While Nightblades and Templars are really lacking in both still.
So that for me, is something I want all tanks to be able to do regardless of class and weapon choice, its not all but its an example of something I would like to hear more opinions on from others. Now for when it comes to a selling point for the classes I got a few but not all down yet but will give some examples again to spark discussion.
Wardens:
Defensive group wide buffs. AoE Major Protection, AoE Major Ward/Resolve, potential for AoE Minor Intellect/Endurance as well as a solid way to apply Minor Lifesteal. This combined with the potential for higher than average minor maim AoE using Frost they have a great set up for buffs and debuffs. Throw in a Circle of Protection and they are a really great mitigation giver for hard hitting fights. Might not always be necessary but great to have in situations where it is.
Templars:
The healing tank, for obvious reasons, more so than a warden and a nightblade, the templar could have a great set up for extra healing in any group that they are in. Purging negative effects, giving resources and healing them, they can in their own way make sure their party does not fall. Now I would like to see some HP bases heals thrown in there to help allies with more healing, much like what they warden got, though while the warden has it its not a primary selling point.
Dragonknights:
Offensive group wide buffs+defensive shields. With Engulfing flames giving out extra fire damage and Molten Weapons giving out AoE damage buffs they got a great potential as a damage buff oriented tank, which they are. I feel like Molten weapons and its morphs are lacking though, everyone uses spell and weapon power pots so its not really that necessary. Would love to see one of the morphs potentially give out AoE empower stacks or another small damage bonus in some way. Other abilities that are less used also have the potential for similar readjustments. Tough to be fair DKs are the strongest Tank already so should not give them too much in this way.
Nightblades:
For me I see them as the damage dealing tanks. They have the biggest potential to themselves do a lot of damage, while this is not that useful in Trials it can be in 4 man content. The fact that their offensive abilities also heal is a great combo for a Jack of all Trades type tank that can swap things up for whatever fight they might get themselves into.
I didn't have as much to say about NBs and I am not really sure about sorcs, their pets have great potential but at the moment are falling flat and don't see a good use for them as a tank. Anyway, what is YOUR view of the classes and what they should be able to do and what their unique selling points should be? I am very much so looking forward to hearing what people have to say about Tanking Class design. And while I probably won't get a response I would love to know what they devs vision is for the classes.
