Given the high participation in base dungeons and low participation in dlc dungeons i am under the belief that the the ultra twitchy mechanics based gameplay is just not a good fit for the eso playerbase. These kind of mechanics are good for more organized gameplay like trials because there are structures in place to allow the players to effectively learn the strategies. Im not against the trials having these types of mechanics as this is where they belong.
It seems to me that players in this game avoid mechanics like the plague. Mechanics are something that needs to be learned and practiced and while this works in trials there is no support structure for the average player to learn anything from these mechanics. You cant force anyone to participate in guilds they dont like or weird practices like giving your character a disorder to get more dmg so you can complete content by avoiding mechanics (oh the irony!).
I think that eso should abandon trying to make the dungeons like mini trials and focus on other ways to introduce challenges to the content. Believe it or not there is more than one way to do things! Im not saying there should be no mechanics but rather they should be used more sparingly for twitchy ( dodge/block or die) combat in the dungeons. This does not mean that it has to be easy either!
Instead i propose that the mechanics for dungeons be more global in nature. The use of alternative win conditions like even staying alive, beating a timer, defending a small keep , finding something hidden. There are endless ways to make things fun and challenging. They dont even need to make brand new artwork when they want to make a new dungeon. They just need a new scenario and use existing assets. Yes i know some of these things can be done in pvp but theres no reason not to explore them in pve as well. The assets all exist.
Eso is a great game but i think its become bogged down in mechanics based gameplay (not knocking those who like it), and thus the scope of providing interesting group content has been narrowed down to something most players arent really interested in.
its time to admit that this doesnt work and explore alternatives. Its time for something new. Its time for "scenarios".
i also propose that these scenarios all be done through the fighters, thieves , assassin's and mages guilds and the focus of the scenarios be relevant to those guilds ( i.e thieves guild would be focused on a group trying to steal things). This will require that these npc guilds be made into real guilds that players can join with a chat people can use.
this is the 4 man content that players of this game really want. They dont care about your mechanics.
