[Mechanics article] Item quality, and its effect on the computation of set bonus value
Ever noticed something counter-intuitive about the way set bonuses are calculated? For example, adding one piece of gold-quality gear to an otherwise fully-purple set can result—though not always—in ZERO change to the set bonuses provided. It always puzzled me, and a recent bug report (link) reminded me of the issue, so I decided to investigate and post my findings here, in an unnecessarily complicated article that will probably never affect most of the playerbase. But to all those interested—enjoy!
To start off, there are two very clear constants governing the stam/mag provided by a standard 1-4pc set bonus (stam/mag is arbitrarily chosen; you could pick a different stat, eg. weapon damage, but the rules are the same):
It's what happens between those two extremes that gets confusing. In the following example, we start from a baseline of a fully-purple 5pc set, and observe how the set bonus transforms as we add more gold pieces to the set. Notice that at certain intervals, there is no gain in the stat bonus despite the addition of a gold piece, as mentioned in the intro:
It gets even more complicated when we include a 2-handed weapon as part of the 5pc set, meaning it now only comprises of 4 individual items. Once again, we see a "null interval" where adding an additional gold piece does nothing, but this time there's only one:
What about a 2pc set, you ask? I tested that with the Tremorscale monster set:
From these examples, we can draw several common observations:
Because these intervals occur at different points depending on how many items comprise the set, I suspected there was some underlying proportionality involved. Since there are 3 intervals, the simplest and most likely hypothesis was that they were distributed evenly-apart, at thirds, along the purple to gold spectrum:
This seems consistent with the first set of data (5pc set consisting of 5 items). With one gold piece, you are 20% of the way towards full-gold and have not passed the one-third milestone, hence no change. You pass this upon adding 2 gold pieces (40%) and thus bump-up the bonus to 1071. 3 pieces, 60%, no change. 4 pieces, 80%, 1083 due to passing the two-thirds milestone. This framework also holds true for the 4-items data, as well as the Tremorscale data.
The final, conclusive way to verify this hypothesis was to test a 3pc jewelry set, since the theoretical intervals coincide precisely with the number of items involved. For this I chose the Ancient Grace set, and yes, I actually purchased gold jewelry solely for research purposes. The result:
Bingo!
So to summarize these findings in picture format for easier reference:
![qWv5SH4.png]()
Note: just a reminder that these interval values (1058 - 1096) apply to max stam/mag set bonuses. If we were considering a different stat—eg. mag/stam/health regen, spell/weapon damage—they would use a different set of numbers (124, 126, 127, 129) but adhere to the same interval points.
To start off, there are two very clear constants governing the stam/mag provided by a standard 1-4pc set bonus (stam/mag is arbitrarily chosen; you could pick a different stat, eg. weapon damage, but the rules are the same):
- A fully-purple set provides 1058
- A fully-gold set provides 1096
It's what happens between those two extremes that gets confusing. In the following example, we start from a baseline of a fully-purple 5pc set, and observe how the set bonus transforms as we add more gold pieces to the set. Notice that at certain intervals, there is no gain in the stat bonus despite the addition of a gold piece, as mentioned in the intro:
- 5 purple pieces - 1058
- +1 gold piece(s) - no change
- +2 gold piece(s) - 1071
- +3 gold piece(s) - no change
- +4 gold piece(s) - 1083
- +5 gold piece(s) - 1096
It gets even more complicated when we include a 2-handed weapon as part of the 5pc set, meaning it now only comprises of 4 individual items. Once again, we see a "null interval" where adding an additional gold piece does nothing, but this time there's only one:
- 4 purple pieces - 1058
- +1 gold piece(s) - no change
- +2 gold piece(s) - 1071
- +3 gold piece(s) - 1083
- +4 gold piece(s) - 1096
What about a 2pc set, you ask? I tested that with the Tremorscale monster set:
- 2 purple pieces - 1058
- +1 gold piece(s) - 1071
- +2 gold piece(s) - 1096
From these examples, we can draw several common observations:
- When wearing a mix of gold/purple, the resultant stat bonus is NOT a numerical average
- When adding more gold pieces, the change in stat occurs at discrete intervals
- There are only 3 such intervals (eg. 1071, 1083, 1096)
Because these intervals occur at different points depending on how many items comprise the set, I suspected there was some underlying proportionality involved. Since there are 3 intervals, the simplest and most likely hypothesis was that they were distributed evenly-apart, at thirds, along the purple to gold spectrum:
- 33.3% - 1071
- 66.7% - 1083
- 100% - 1096
This seems consistent with the first set of data (5pc set consisting of 5 items). With one gold piece, you are 20% of the way towards full-gold and have not passed the one-third milestone, hence no change. You pass this upon adding 2 gold pieces (40%) and thus bump-up the bonus to 1071. 3 pieces, 60%, no change. 4 pieces, 80%, 1083 due to passing the two-thirds milestone. PS4/NA (Cyro & IC): Vivec - This Must Be The Place...

yes, a very naive melody

initially I had tried to kick off the conversation with questions on a bunch of random topics...
love to fight, carry scrolls, gank, defend, attack, pour oil on folks, repair keep walls til your fingers bleed - this is your thread...
love hearing big and little battle stories, as well as observations concerning the interaction between the alliances in this campaign - who doesn't love a good bridge fight...
big IC fan...at this point i wanna apologize right now for anything weird or crazy i may have done in IC (or for any future stuff)...I'm pretty laid back in cyro - IC has a way of getting me fired up on occasion...
hmmmmm, is it really true cyro reveals whom you want to be, and, IC reveals who you truly are...
if you want - say what's up, and if you like - let us all know what's up...
anyhow - enjoy, and, happy gaming trails...
bonus question: if any one knows where the reference "loose tales" (spelt differently) comes from - you'll win...ummmm, my undying admiration?

Cyrodiil is dying. Cheating, spying, faction jumping, scrolls being taken illegitimately. Cant speak for xbox or pc but ps4 cyrodiil pvp is going to be empty very soon.
I myself with about 15 friends have decided to either stop playing (which half have already done because of said reasons) or are switching to BG’s.
Nothing zos does will save cyrodiil.

Odd: Computation of purple and golden Set Boni is not correct when mixed
Hello everyone,
ESO: eso.live.4.2.6.1683195 / EU
Bug A: There is currently some odd behavior with the computation of Set Boni when purple and golden gear is mixed.
Bug B: A golden Staff is not equal to 2 golden armor pieces.
Most likely this is also true for blue, green and white gear, which I did not test.
Set tested: Mothers Sorrow
Bonus: 2 pieces Magicka
All Purple Bonus: 1058 Magicka
All Gold Bonus: 1096 Magicka
Expected Behaviour A: total_magicka = (n_gold_pieces * 1096 + n_purple_pieces * 1058)/(n_gold_pieces + n_purple_pieces)
Expected Behaviour B: A staff counts as two pieces.
Test: Equiped different combinations of purple jewellery, golden armor and golden staff.
The results can be seen below. The numbers in () are the expected results computed with the formula above.
Result A: You can see the difference of the values
Result B: You can see a difference if you complare for example 2 gold 3 purple for Staff+Jewellery and Armor + Jewellery. These rows are italic.
Also you can see that the Difference 2g1p, 2g2p, and 2g3p for Staff is -12,-6,-25 and for Armor -0,-6,-2. Hence the boni with an equiped staff must be computed differently, and obviously are worth.
Jewellery
2 purple 1058
Staff + Jewellery (Here 2 gold = 1 staff)
2 gold 0 purple : 1096 (1096) -0
2 gold 1 purple : 1071 (1083) -12
2 gold 2 purple : 1071 (1077) -6
2 gold 3 purple : 1058 (1073) -25
Armor + Jewellery
1 gold 1 purple : 1071 (1077) -6
1 gold 2 purple : 1071 (1070) -1
1 gold 3 purple : 1058 (1067) -9
2 gold 0 purple : 1096 (1096) -0
2 gold 1 purple : 1083 (1083) -0
2 gold 2 purple : 1071 (1077) -6
2 gold 3 purple : 1071 (1073) -2
Armor + 1 staff + jewellery (Here 4 gold = 1 staff + 2 armor)
4 gold 1 purple : 1083 (1088) -4
3 gold 2 purple : 1071 (1080) -9
3 gold 1 purple : 1083 (1086) -3
Example: In the Screenshot you can see the usage of 1 golden staff, 1 golden armor and 1 purple necklace.
This combination results in 1083 Max Magicka.
Note, that the computation of the max Magicka works correctly with the value from the tooltip.
Here:
((7958 + 7104 + [1083 + 868 + 840]) *1.2) + 4936) * 1.26 = 33213
Base Magicka CP160: 7958
Attribute Magicka (64 Points * 111) = 7104
Set Bonus: 1083
Armor Glyph: 868
Necklace Arcane: 840
CP Multiplicator: 1.2 // max 1.2 >300CP
Blue Max/Max Bufffood: 4936
Magicka Multiplikator: 1.26 (Magicka Flood 0.08, Inner Light 0.07, Dark Elf 0.09, Light Armor Undaunted 0.02)

Purge options for stamina characters
So far I’ve though of
Efficient purge
Wyrd tree blessing
Blue better (I’m using Bull Netch so this really isn’t an option unfortunately)
Purifying ritual (only for stamplar)
So far the only on that seems like a viable option for all Stam builds would be Wyrd tree. Is there any I am missing?

[PC/NA/PST] [EP] LF a nice guild who is laid back, chill & likes to have fun.
Hi, Everyone!
I am currently looking for a guild that is very welcoming to the shy folk like me. I mostly play solo, but i do enjoy helping players out where I can, and love chatting with people. So a little about me:
I am 24 year old female. I main a Breton Magplar Healer CP280+. I have played MMO's since 2004, with my first being OG Runescape back in the day, lol. I don't play WoW. i tried it when it was first released, and didn't like the art style or combat, so i haven't played it since. I've been a fan of TES series for awhile as well, with Morrowind being my first. I started playing this game when it released back in 2014. I stopped playing due to the same reasons most people did, and then picked it back up in 2016 on PS4. There, I mained a Nord StamDK & made it my home for about a year. Then when i finally had enough money to build myself a decent gaming PC at the end of 2017, i re-downloaded it and have been on PC since. I work a full time job, and i really do try to be on as much as possible. I mostly play early evenings, 7pm to 10pm on weekdays and a good chunk of the weekend i'm on. Sometimes though, life can be a pain, and i am unable to for a week or so at max.
I should mention too, that i have a bit of social anxiety. Don't get me wrong, I love talking to people via chat, but when it comes to running dungeons with randoms, I get a bit nervous. I also have not done any trials and i've only barely dipped into PvP. I have ran dungeons a lot though when i played a tank on PS4, so I do know most of them, except for a few that came out with recent DLCs. I feel like i haven't done a lot of end game content though due to not having a group to play with. I am always eager to learn, though!
I also really like helping new players when I can, even with simple stuff. The game isn't a race so taking my time or helping players level is totally fine by me. I also love exploring zones and doing quests.
I'm pretty nerdy and love talking about all sorts of things, even if its not ESO related, lol. I hang out in Stonefalls a lot, due to the aesthetic and people there are generally pretty nice.
I have all the expansions, ESO+ and i'm sure like most people, have the Grand Psijic Villa.![:) :)]()
Also kind related, but not related. I get asked about it a lot so to clear things up: My main's name is Combat Medic Mercy. YES, she is named after Mercy on the game Overwatch. I played there for awhile mained her 300+hours. The game went to ***, and i wasn't having fun anymore so I stopped playing. I love the character though and I always will. No, i am not a Blizz fan. never have been!
Thank you! I hope i can soon find a forever home!

In-combat even more broeken
ESO has had an in-combat issue since before the game launched. it gets a little better than a little worse.
With the current update on PC it has probably never been worse. I just walked from an outpost to inside the next keep in combat all the way even though combat was not following me and I was not taking any additional actions.
Zos chose to implement a change with swapping skills yet seems to choose to ignore the flaws that seriously impugns the changes even further.
@ZOS_MattFiror @ZOS_GinaBruno How long will Zos make change without fixing the obvious flaws related to the changes. This type of behavior reflects poorly on management.
Edit: even before this patch there have been times I have been in the home base and somehow been in combat even though that base cannot be attacked and both gates were closed. I had resurrected at that home base. In that line of thought I have resurrected multiple times in a keep not under attack and have been in combat. There really is no excuse for this game behavior.

mob levels: can anyone explain?
So after returning to the game I'm a bit confused how the overland mob levels work in relation to player level. I have been leveling a Warden and every mob I put my cursor on doesn't show a level but rather shows as 160 CP. I assume that when they opened up all 3 regions for cross region play they had to standardize levels somehow to make that work and now they are based on CP instead of the old levels. Is that correct?
That being said I still don't really understand how this works. Does that 160 CP I'm seeing on the health bar represent difficulty or something else? I have been in Vvardenfel on a level 15 and Craglorn on my level 50 but all mobs everywhere seem to show the same 160 CP so it doesn't seem like it is difficulty. I currently have 270 CP so would that 160 be different for a new player with no CP? How does mob difficulty scale between a new player with no CP and someone with 500 CP? Also, how does this apply to dungeon difficulty?
Sorry if this is obvious but it's not clear to me!

ZOS, what did you do to the servers...
At this point we are just repeating ourselves, but: The servers are even worse than before. Skills are not going off at all, buttons need to be pressed 3 times to get 1 skill working. Bar swaps is not possible at times or the bar swaps occur 3 times in an instant (swap-swap-swap). When an enemy targets you with some kind of knockback ability (drainign shot, meteor etc.) the game will pull you back to some random point or the knockback will happen a dozen meters from where the actual impact happened. Potions are not working, need to be pressed 5 times.
This is on PC EU, Sotha Sil PVP campaign, so not even CP activated.
I'm a long time PvPer, so I know how bad the servers can be. But after this patch it is just ridiculous.
