The geology of Northern Elsweyr is incompatible with TES Lore

TL;DR Elsweyr has a designed-in sequence of realistic rock strata that must have taken millions of years to form. The TES Lore timeline from the creation of Nirn onwards spans only a few thousand years. I think the Devs have some explaining to do.

Elsweyr has visible geology. This is by design. The web article "Discover Elsweyr & the Khajiit that Live There" says:

Even when designing the new zone’s rocky environments such as the Scar, a giant canyon that cuts through the heart of the map, the team looked to the world around them for inspiration and direction.

“We researched different types of faults, including the kind of rocks they would generate, and investigated what the actual stratification of the rocks would be throughout the whole zone. In The Elder Scrolls Online, there’s a reason for everything. We never just come up with something; we look for the reasons why something is here to ensure it’s appropriate for the biome and has a real-world analogue.

There’s always a logic to the way things are in Tamriel, grounding it in reality. Because of this attention to detail, it provides unique challenges for ESO’s designers, who are tasked with crafting the environments in a way that is visually appealing, realistic, and fun to play.

I think the Devs got too realistic this time. Way, way too realistic. They seem to have forgotten that geology is not just a bunch of rocks, it's a process.

When I look at the landscape of Elsweyr I see that the lowest stratum is a solid, undifferentiated block of sandstone-like rock. This base stratum has many weathered buttes and rock pinnacles sticking up from its surface:

IRL geologists call pinnacles like these "yardangs". The Wikipedia article on yardangs says, "A yardang is a streamlined protuberance carved from bedrock or any consolidated or semiconsolidated material by the dual action of wind abrasion by dust and sand, and deflation which is the removal of loose material by wind turbulence."

The buttes and the yardangs are evidence of a very long and slow process of wind erosion.

In some places in Elsweyr there are also beds of sedimentary rock. These are quite deep:

It can be seen that the sedimentary strata overlay the wind-eroded base stratum, filling in the spaces between the buttes and yardangs. This creates an unconformity. Wikipeida says - "An unconformity is a buried erosional or non-depositional surface separating two rock masses or strata of different ages, indicating that sediment deposition was not continuous. In general, the older layer was exposed to erosion for an interval of time before deposition of the younger."

This is all evidence of a geological process. The base layer of rock was exposed to wind erosion for long enough to allow the formation of the buttes and yardangs. Then the whole landscape must have been sunk beneath water for long enough to allow for the deposition of the sedimentary strata that fill the gaps between the buttes and yardangs. Long enough for those sediment layers to be changed into solid rock strata. The land surface must then have been lifted above the waves once more. A further time period must then have elapsed, long enough for a vast amount of the sedimentary strata to be eroded away, to form the landscape we can now see in Elsweyr.

Notice how far down the sedimentary rock strata have been eroded away to expose the base stratum's buttes and yardangs once again.

On planet Earth this geological process would take millions of years to happen. How can these millions of years of realistic geological processes be reconciled with the TES Lore time line? According to TES Lore there may have been as little as 6000 years between the creation of Nirn and the time of ESO.

I'd like to see how the Devs are going talk their way out of this one. I'm sure it would make a fascinating addition to TES Lore. Are we supposed to believe that a few thousand years ago the Earth Bones created Nirn in such a way that it was already many millions of years old? Hmmm, I seem to remember hearing that argument somewhere before.

Anyone got any better ideas to help us all resolve this lorific conundrum?

Can We Please Have Two Things

I don't know where else to put this since there isn't a "suggestion" forum so here it goes.

Can we please have a setting that copies all of the game settings from an existing character to a new one? It's plain annoying to have to go through all the game, keybind, and addon settings to duplicate everything every time. Yeah there are more pressing issues but I'm just tossing this out there. It would be an awesome QoL improvement.

Also, can we please have a built in minimap? I've never seen a game without one. Sure we can use an addon but the more addons we have the more it stresses our machines and the greater chance something won't play nice with something.

Golden vendor for consoles please change items to shoulders instead of helms!

Can we please offer monster set shoulders instead of helms like we have on the PC?

I'm getting furious that I already have 6 of the same monster helm and not a single shoulder yet. Seriously when one item is locked behind a RNG wall and the other a reward for completing content, why would you offer the later as another means of obtaining it via alliance points? That makes no sense. Its a slap in the face to those who put in time and skill to actually be able to complete content and rewards those who suck at the game or are just casual/new players that have a little luck. I've literally seen cp 200 players running around with the set I want who couldn't even clear VBC... The best gear in the game should be earnable at some point in time for those who work for it. At least if you already have the mechanic for it already. I've thrown 1000s of keys into just 3 little chests to still not have 3 of the shoulders that I want/need (and I mean the actual shoulders, even if it's the wrong trait) yet I have a healthy stack of helms just waiting to be paired with it's counterpart. I like the idea of offering RNG items for sale even if it's a hefty price considering if your good enough to obtain the counterpart you probably have the funds to get the other whenever it goes on sale. But sell the item that's locked behind the RNG wall and let the player go out and earn the helm considering if they are good enough to do so. Is that too much to ask for? You have it that way for PC, why consoles have to be different is totally beyond my mind...

Rapid Maneuver not casting while mounted.

Hello I have a recurring issue with rapid maneuver not casting while mounted across all my characters, When I try to cast rapid maneuver it looks like the animation is cancelled and it wont actually cast, I then have to dismount and remount and it will cast again but not for long as it will happen again. Anyone have a fix for this?

So I've been running this Alcast build for a while now and so far I'm quite enjoying it - I'm not the best of players - currently hitting around 12-15k DPS (20-25k on a large mob). I have one issue with it though- it's heavily reliant on AOE. I tend to find that this build excels when there's either a large group of enemies or where an enemy is fairly static. I'm struggling to find any sort of spammable single target skill that works with this build - at the moment I'm just using Elemental Weapon but it takes a fair while to cast. Are there any Magblade's that could recommend a spammable skill to use when my AOE is down?

The 2nd boss Mighty Chudan broken:
1) Argonian mages in electric bubble spawn
2) Player with double-circle-AOE on his feet stand directly between boss and electric bubble
3) Boss rushs and must to destroy bubble and Argonian inside, but bubble and Argonian still live.
So Dungeon can't be finished because Argonian mages can't be destroyed.

Looking to make an Orc tank - class advice?

Title, really. Tanking's what I'm really wanting to get good at in ESO - never touched healing, and DPS is more of a slow burn - so where should I start? I'm looking for any and all advice, especially around what class and skills are the best to use. What I'm least flexible on is the race. I'd really like it to be an Orc. I have a stamina Templar Orc already, with whom I've done a lot of tanking, but I'm taking that character in more of a DPS-heavy all-rounder direction for now, possibly with PVP in mind. This new Orc tank would not be for PVP though, it'd be for PVE with a view to end-game content in the distant future.

Any and all advice gratefully received. I'd also take pointers on which up-to-date videos to watch, because so far the only ones I've found are out of date.

I abandoned the quest cause it wasnt working, I thought I could restart it, but even after abandoning it, Vastarie is no where to give me the quest again. The crystals I put on the ground for her in the first part of the quest are still there-- I'm not sure if that's supposed to happen or not-- but now I have an area I cannot complete. Thanks for reading, I hope it can get fixed. I tried to put in a ticket, but since the quest is no longer in my journal, I cannot.

Free the Warden class!

I figured out why I hate playing my Warden now. Every time there is even a sniff of “warden may possibly be too good” Zos beats it death so they can’t be accused of Pay to Win.

If Warden was base game, like how Morrowind is no longer a chapter, then they wouldn’t be so precious about it.

Hey I preordered the “chapter” and the class on day 1 announcement (on top of my subscription as shady as it was at the time) so it’s not like I have anything to gain from them making it a part of the base game. In fact I’ve been “losing” on that purchase ever since.

What I will gain though, is the fun of my class back. And those are just the most recent nerfs from Murkmire. They’ve nerfed it every time since then

And there’s more from Elsweyr, further reinforcing the need to just include it already.

So, I realized today that I could pick up the Sugar Bowl Suite with my new necromancer character for free. Over the past few days I had been lucky enough to get some new housing recipes from dragons and today I tried some of the new recipes and housing items along with some old furnishings.

Hi there,

wanted to let you know not all dyes are working on the armored pieces of the Anequina style especially the newer dyes like the jewelry gold one and the glacial topaz from frost vaults. Please fix this as I hate the ugly red its default to.

Suggestion: Account factions instead of characters factions

I didn't expect faction lock to be implemented like this at all. I'm not a fan of having characters that are simply unable to enter cyrodiil due to the current system. Many players are also unhappy with being unable to play cyrodiil with their friends and guildmates.

I think the best option would be to tie a player's faction to the entire account for the duration of the selected campaign rather than on a per character basis.

Thoughts?

Guild for active players. Noob Friendly. Never any dues. Near capacity, guild trader regularly!!

Hall of the Lunar Champion seems to be exactly that, a hall with portal leading to vast spaces that look very apt for placing attunable crafting stations and or Target dummys. Also, they are introducing a new concept where you have to do certain quests to open up the Hall's portals and this is where it starts to look like what people were asking for in a guild hall. Many players have been requesting that zos create guild halls where members can work together to achieve guild rewards to build up the guild house or hall as a collective group rather than just have the guild master run the whole show.

This is just an idea that came to me when i entered the Lunar champion hall. What are your thoughts on this? Please note that I do realise this particular house is not a model of a guild hall but I can see elements of what could potentally be implemented in the design of a proper 500 member guild hall.

Can we get a do-over on the class changes?

@ZOS_GinaBruno The community feedback is that the majority of players are unhappy with the class changes that were made for Elsweyr. Can we get ZOS to re-review and revert some class changes? When racial passives changes, we were given the option to change our class. When class skills change we were given nothing. The result is a lot of unhappy customers, and lots of characters that have been demoted to crafters only.
